Sight Words

Below are the Dolch Pre-Primer/Primer/Grade One word lists that we will be learning throughout the year.  All words will be taught in the classroom through our phonics program, spelling program and general word work.  Once taught, the word flashcards will be sent home for further practice.  Please note, we do not complete one full list before moving on or teach the words in alphabetical order, instead we teach words based on the frequency they are used in grade 1 writing/ reading and by common spelling patterns (e.g. words with short a sound, bossy e words, etc.).

We will be learning to read the color and number words to ten as well.

On full weeks, 4 spelling words will be introduced on Monday and sent home with your child to practice.  These words will be tested on Friday.

In Grade 1, we work towards fluency in our reading.  One of the best ways to build that fluency is to build sight word recognition.  Please have your child practice the word cards daily for instant recall of each word.   All of the words sent home to practice will be tested at each reporting period.

Thank you for your help in practicing these words with your child.

Please click on the picture below to access the word cards.

Here are a few Sight Word Activities that you can do with your child to help them easily recognize sight words:

1.  Make two sets of the sight words and play "Go Fish and Memory" games

2.  Give your child a word from the list and have them
    -  hunt for it in their reading book
    -  race them to see who can find it first in their reading book

3.  Use Scrabble tiles or magnetic letters and ask your child to spell the words

4. Use the sight words to build sentences

5. Hide a bunch of words around the house and have your child search for them and read them to you.
